Spearing

Spearing refers to the practice of hunting or catching animals with a spear or spear-like weapon. Historically it was used by many cultures for fishing and hunting aquatic life, as well as for land game in some regions. In contemporary usage, spearing most commonly denotes underwater hunting with either a pole spear or a speargun, where a spear is propelled toward the target.

Equipment and methods vary. Pole spears are hand-launched and require close proximity and steady technique, while spearguns use elastic bands or compressed air to project the spear. Divers typically wear a mask, fins, and a snorkel or freediving gear, along with a wetsuit, weight belt, and sometimes a protective sheath. Ethical and legal considerations include avoiding protected species and adhering to local regulations on seasons, bag limits, and restricted areas.

Regulations and safety are central to the practice. Rules vary widely by country and region, with some places requiring licenses, prohibiting spearfishing in certain waters, or banning it for specific species. Conservation concerns have shaped practices, leading to no-take zones, size limits, and gear restrictions in many areas to protect reef systems and fish populations.

In other contexts, spearing can refer to the act of stabbing with a spear or to specific sports penalties. In football, spearing denotes a dangerous foul involving leading with the helmet into an opponent. In ice hockey, it can refer to jabbing with the blade of a stick. These uses are separate from hunting practices and are subject to sport-specific rules and safety standards.
