Software-in-the-loop, often abbreviated SIL, is a software testing approach used in model-based design in which the control software is executed on a computer within a simulated environment. The plant or process to be controlled is represented by a mathematical model, and the interaction between the controller software and the plant is evaluated without any physical hardware. The term can also be written as software-in-the-loop or seen in concatenated forms such as softwareintheloop in informal contexts.

In SIL, the focus is on validating the software components themselves—control algorithms, state machines, interfaces, and data handling—by running generated or hand-written code against a simulated plant. This allows engineers to verify logic, timing, data formats, and software reliability early in development, often as part of a model-based design workflow that may progress from model-in-the-loop (MIL) to processor- or hardware-in-the-loop (PIL/HIL) testing before final deployment.

Workflow typically involves developing a plant model and controller code, generating executable code if using model-based tools, and running the combined system in a real-time or non-real-time simulation environment. Observations focus on outputs, timing behavior, and robustness under varying inputs. SIL is commonly followed by PIL and HIL to introduce target hardware and real-world dynamics.

Applications span automotive control units, aerospace flight control, robotics, and industrial process control, where early software validation can reduce risk and cost. Tools in this space include simulation environments and code-generation platforms that enable running controller software against high-fidelity plant models on standard computing hardware, prior to hardware integration.
