Småsignalstabilitet refers to the behavior of a system when subjected to small perturbations around an equilibrium point. In many engineering and physics contexts, it's crucial to understand if a system will return to its equilibrium state after a small disturbance or if it will diverge. This analysis is performed by linearizing the system's equations of motion around the equilibrium point and examining the eigenvalues of the resulting linear system.

If all eigenvalues have negative real parts, the equilibrium point is considered asymptotically stable, meaning that any small disturbance will eventually die out, and the system will return to its equilibrium. If any eigenvalue has a positive real part, the equilibrium point is unstable, and even small perturbations will grow over time, leading the system away from equilibrium. If some eigenvalues have zero real parts and the rest have negative real parts, the system might exhibit oscillatory behavior or marginally stable behavior, where small disturbances neither decay nor grow indefinitely.
