Asymptotically is an adverb used in mathematics and related fields to describe the behavior of a function, sequence, or system in the limit, typically as its input grows without bound or approaches a specific value. It emphasizes the leading, dominant behavior rather than exact finite values.

In asymptotic analysis, several notations express limiting relationships. If f(n) ~ g(n) as n → ∞, then the ratio f(n)/g(n) tends to 1. Big-O notation, written f(n) = O(g(n)), bounds f above by a constant multiple of g for large n. Little-o notation, f(n) = o(g(n)), means f(n)/g(n) → 0 as n → ∞. Theta notation, f(n) = Θ(g(n)), indicates f and g grow at the same rate up to constant factors: there exist positive constants c1, c2 and N such that c1|g(n)| ≤ |f(n)| ≤ c2|g(n)| for all n ≥ N.

Examples help illustrate. If f(n) = 3n^2 + 2n, then f(n) ~ 3n^2 as n → ∞, and f(n) = Θ(n^2). The factorial function satisfies n! ~ sqrt(2πn)(n/e)^n, an asymptotic expansion that captures its growth for large n.
