Smallfastening refers to a category of fastening solutions optimized for small-scale assemblies where space is limited, weights are minimized, and precision is essential. It encompasses a range of products and techniques designed to join components with small form factors, including micro mechanical fasteners, micro rivets, snap-fit and clip systems, as well as adhesive bonds and hybrid solutions. The concept is widely used in electronics, optics, consumer devices, aerospace components, and medical devices, where traditional fasteners would be impractical due to size, stiffness, or thermal considerations.

Common forms include micro screws and set screws with diameters typically from about 0.6 mm to 3 mm, low-profile nuts and threaded inserts, tiny rivets, as well as snap-fit or clamp-style fasteners that snap into a housing. Materials are chosen for strength-to-weight, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability, such as stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, brass, and engineering polymers. Surface treatments and coatings such as zinc, nickel, and passivation improve wear and corrosion resistance. Manufacturing methods include precision machining, micro-stamping, laser drilling, and precision dispensing for adhesives; installation often requires specialized jigs and torque control.

Performance considerations include pull-out and shear strength, retention under vibration, thermal cycling, and serviceability. Design factors emphasize alignment features, tolerances, head clearance, lubrication compatibility, and the avoidance of stress concentrations. The term smallfastening serves as a conceptual umbrella for approaches that enable reliable joining at miniature scales.
