Slipcovers

Slipcovers are fabric coverings placed over upholstered furniture, designed to protect the underlying furniture, alter its appearance, or both. They are used on sofas, chairs, loveseats, and sectional pieces and come in a range of materials, colors, and styles. Most slipcovers are designed to either stretch over the furniture with elastic edges or to be fitted with zippers, buttons, or ties to secure a tailored look.

Fit and types: Ready-made, universal slipcovers aim to fit a variety of furniture sizes, while tailored or custom slipcovers are cut to specific measurements. Common configurations include sofa, loveseat, chair, and sectional slipcovers. Some are designed with elastic corner straps or a combination of seams and closures to reduce shifting.

Materials: Fabrics range from cotton and polyester blends to microfiber, velvet, linen, and canvas. Performance fabrics may be stain-resistant or woven to reduce pilling. Care requirements vary; many are machine washable, while others require dry cleaning or spot cleaning.

Advantages and limitations: Slipcovers can protect upholstery from spills, pet hair, and wear and tear, and allow rapid changes of decor. They can be a cost-effective alternative to reupholstering. Drawbacks can include shifting, wrinkling, or the need for occasional adjustments to maintain a neat fit, and some fabrics may wear quickly with heavy use.
