Slights

Slights are acts or remarks that convey a perceived lack of regard, respect, or consideration for a person. They are usually minor and may be intentional or accidental. Unlike overt insults, slights are often subtle, ambiguous, or involve omission.

Common forms include talking over someone, dismissive or curt remarks, exclusion from plans, being overlooked in praise, or having one’s contributions minimized. Slights can be direct or indirect and vary by context and relationship.

Causes include personal biases, stereotypes, power dynamics, and cultural norms about politeness. Perception is key; the same action can feel like a slight to one person and be neutral to another, particularly when identity factors are involved.

Effects range from irritation and embarrassment to lowered self-esteem and strained relationships. Repeated slights can contribute to chronic stress and a sense of social exclusion, especially for marginalized groups.

Coping and response often involve clarifying intent, communicating one’s feelings, setting boundaries, or choosing to disengage. In some cases, addressing the behavior can improve understanding; in others, avoiding further contact may be safer.

In research, slights are studied as perceived disrespect, with attention to context, power, and culture. They overlap with concepts such as microaggressions and social snubs, but are defined by the recipient’s interpretation of the action.
