Skärplinge

Skärplinge is a small rural locality situated in Norrtälje Municipality in Stockholm County, Sweden. The village is located on the northern part of the island of Norra Skärplinge, approximately 25 kilometers north of Norrtälje.

The area is home to a few small farms and a few dozen permanent residents. Skärplinge is relatively isolated, with its nearest neighbor being the smaller Skälvik village about 10 kilometers away.

Historically, Skärplinge was the center of the Skärplinge socken, a Swedish administrative and ecclesiastical unit. The socken, in turn, was part of the larger Djurö and Norrstälje hundred in the Stockholm County.

A wooden church was established in Skärplinge in the 13th century, which was later rebuilt into a stone structure in the 15th century. Although the church no longer exists, historical records indicate that it was consecrated in 1560.

Scenic and forested views are prominent features of the Skärplinge area, with abundant wildlife such as moose and other species. During winter months, the area is blanketed with snow, creating conditions ideal for cross-country skiing and other winter sports.

As of the 2010s, Skärplinge has continued to function as a small agricultural village, relying on seasonal fishing and hunting for additional support. Local residents maintain a close-knit community with limited modern amenities.

The local transportation and postal service mainly operated through hereditary mailmen and nearby villages. Many of its inhabitants are drawn from the larger nearby Norrtälje and Skänninge towns. Today, communication between nearby towns is significantly easier, thanks to advancements in transportation technology.
