Sivupäillä

Sivupäillä is a Finnish term that translates to "sideways heads" or "side heads" in English. It generally refers to a peculiar phenomenon where an animal, most commonly seen in dogs, exhibits an unusual posture or gait. Instead of walking or running with their heads facing forward, they might tilt their head to one side or even run with their head turned to an extreme angle, appearing to move on a diagonal axis.

This behavior is not a breed-specific trait but can occur in any dog. While the cause can vary, it is often associated with neurological issues. These can range from minor inner ear infections that affect balance to more serious conditions like vestibular disease, which directly impacts the brain's control over balance and spatial orientation. In some cases, it can also be a symptom of brain tumors or other neurological disorders.

Less commonly, sivupäillä can be a behavioral or learned response, although this is much rarer and usually less pronounced than when caused by a physical ailment. Animals might exhibit this if they are trying to get a better view of something from a particular angle or if they have a habit developed from a past injury or discomfort.
