Sittekomfort

Sittekomfort, also referred to as sitting comfort, is a term used in ergonomics to describe how comfortable a person feels while seated. It results from the interaction of body, seat or chair, and task, and includes aspects of physical comfort, thermal comfort, and perceived fit. Good sittekomfort is associated with neutral spinal alignment, even pressure distribution, adequate support, and the ability to move slightly without losing stability.

Key factors that influence sittekomfort include seat geometry (height, depth, width), seat edge shape, backrest height and lumbar support, padding density and resilience, and fabric or leather properties such as breathability and moisture management. The capacity to adjust the seating position, such as height, tilt, lumbar support, and armrest position, as well as the presence of dynamic or active seating mechanisms, also influences comfort. Thermal factors, including heat and moisture buildup, contribute to long-term comfort.

Measurement of sittekomfort is largely subjective but can be evaluated with comfort rating scales and questionnaires; objective methods include pressure distribution mapping, posture analysis, and wearability data. In many contexts, tests simulate long-term use to assess fatigue and tissue loading.

Applications of sittekomfort focus on office furniture, car and aircraft seats, classroom seating, and public spaces, with the aim of maximizing comfort during extended use. Standards and guidelines such as EN 1335 and the ISO 9241 series provide ergonomic criteria and dimensions to support consistent comfort performance.
