Sinkholing

Sinkholing refers to two distinct concepts in natural and digital environments, both involving the creation or use of an empty or controlled space to prevent further harm or to study underlying processes.

In geology, a sinkhole is a depression formed when surface land collapses into an underground void. Sinkholes commonly occur in karst landscapes where soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, or gypsum are dissolved by groundwater. Over time, caverns enlarge and the rock above may no longer support the overburden, leading to sudden collapse or gradual surface subsidence. Sinkholes are typically categorized as dissolution sinkholes, which develop gradually as rock dissolves and the surface gradually sinks, and collapse sinkholes, where the roof of an underground cavity fails abruptly. They can also occur when sediment fills or covers an existing cavity and later fails, forming a funnel-shaped depression. Hazards include damage to buildings, roads, and utilities, as well as disruptions to water and drainage systems. Monitoring and mitigation often involve land-use planning, drainage management, grouting or reinforcing cavities, and timely excavation or filling of unstable areas in high-risk regions.

In cybersecurity, sinkholing is a technique used to divert and neutralize malicious network traffic by routing it to controlled servers or networks under defenders’ control. This is typically accomplished through DNS sinkholes, IP blackholing, or other routing methods. The aim is to disrupt botnets, gather information about infected hosts, and reduce harmful traffic while preserving legitimate communications. Sinkholing provides defenders with visibility into the scale and structure of a malicious network and can aid in high-level disruption efforts, though it is not a universal solution and is often used in combination with other interventions.
