Signaalitööluksessa, often translated as signal booth or signal box, is a railway structure used to house the equipment for controlling railway signals and points. These structures are crucial for safe and efficient train operation, as they allow signalers to manually manage train movements and prevent collisions. Historically, signal boxes were operated by levers, with each lever controlling a specific signal or set of points. As technology advanced, mechanical signaling was gradually replaced by electrical and later by electronic systems.

Modern signal boxes, often referred to as signal boxes or control centers, can be significantly larger and house complex computer-based interlocking systems. These systems integrate signal and point control with other railway operational information, such as train positions detected by track circuits. The signalers in these centers monitor the status of the railway network and make decisions to route trains, manage speed, and ensure safe clearances between trains. The introduction of remote signaling and centralized traffic control has led to the consolidation of multiple signal boxes into larger operational centers, reducing the need for numerous small, localized signal cabins. The design and location of signal boxes have evolved over time, from small wooden huts to more substantial brick or concrete buildings, and in some cases, integrated into larger station buildings or modern control centers.
