Shoulderfire

Shoulderfire refers to firearms or projectile launchers designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a stock resting against the shooter's shoulder to stabilize aiming and recoil. The design enables hands-on control, rapid aiming, and portability, in contrast to larger artillery or to weapons fired from a mounted platform.

The use of shoulder-fired weapons extends back to early firearms in Europe and Asia, where long guns with stocks replaced hand-cannons for improved accuracy and range. Over centuries, developments in rifling, cartridge technology, and propellants increased accuracy, rate of fire, and load capacity, making shoulder-fire common for military, hunting, and sport.

Shoulder-fired weapons encompass a broad range of systems, including small arms such as rifles and shotguns, as well as man-portable anti-vehicle and anti-air devices. Examples include traditional rifles, carbines, and shotguns; anti-tank launchers like rocket-propelled grenade systems; and portable missiles and rifles such as MANPADS and light anti-armor weapons.

Design considerations emphasize recoil management, stability, weight, ergonomics, and sighting systems (iron sights, optical scopes, red dots). Safety features, training, and proper handling are essential due to the potential for serious harm. Maintenance includes cleaning, lubrication, and inspection for wear.

Regulation of shoulder-fired weapons varies by jurisdiction and category. Most countries control ownership, transfer, and use of firearms and anti-armor or anti-air devices. International treaties address illicit trade and nonproliferation. Responsible ownership and compliance with local laws are essential.
