Core elements include detection and tracking (radar and electro-optical sensors), fire control (radars and computer systems), and weapons such as anti-aircraft artillery (AAA), surface-to-air missiles (SAM), and close-in weapon systems (CIWS). AAA uses guns and autocannons; SAMs range from short-range man-portable systems to long-range missiles. CIWS provide last-ditch defenses for ships. Modern defenses are usually integrated into layered networks that coordinate engagements against multiple targets, often supported by electronic warfare and decoys.
