Anti-aircraft refers to weapons and systems designed to defend a ground or sea area from aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and guided missiles. It encompasses ground-based anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) and surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), as well as close-in weapon systems (CIWS) for naval use and integrated air defense networks that link sensors, command centers, and launch units.

Historically, anti-aircraft capabilities began in the early 20th century with light guns and machine guns adapted to shoot at aircraft. In World War II, dedicated anti-aircraft artillery and radar-directed fire became central to defense against bombing, while searchlights aided visibility at night. After the war, guided missiles gradually supplanted many gun-based roles, leading to modern surface-to-air missile systems and layered defense architectures.

In modern use, anti-aircraft defense is typically part of broader air defense, with capabilities to detect, identify, track, and intercept threats. Systems may be land-based or shipborne and are often integrated into an air defense system (IADS) that coordinates sensors, command posts, and launchers to protect strategic assets and population centers.

Key components include AAA for short-to-medium range and high rate of fire, SAMs for longer range, and CIWS for last-ditch defense. Notable examples include short-range naval systems and point-defense missiles, and longer-range systems such as Patriot, S-300/S-400 families, and integrated naval Aegis-based systems. Modern civil defense programs in some countries also deploy point-defense solutions such as Iron Dome.

Effectiveness depends on detection, tracking accuracy, fire-control quality, and countermeasures by an aggressor, as well as the cost and complexity of attacking forces. Threats have evolved to include unmanned systems and hypersonic missiles, challenging traditional defense concepts.
