In some contexts, longerrange involves exploiting lower radio frequencies to improve propagation, or employing directional beams to extend reach while reducing interference.

Applications include rural broadband, sensor networks in large campuses or industrial sites, disaster response communications, and IoT deployments where devices are sparsely distributed. The concept also appears in cellular and satellite communications, where base stations, relays, and user equipment collaborate to provide coverage beyond line-of-sight or over obstacles.
