Sesamolin

Sesamolin is a natural lignan found in sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum) and sesame oil. It is one of the major lignan compounds in sesame, alongside sesamin. Sesamolin belongs to the class of polyphenolic lignans and is characterized by methylenedioxy bridges in its chemical structure, making it a methylenedioxy-substituted lignan.

Natural occurrence and content: Sesamolin occurs in relatively high amounts in sesame seeds and oil; its level varies with cultivar, processing, and extraction method. It is often quantified together with sesamin in metabolomic and nutritional analyses.

Chemical and pharmacology: In laboratory studies, sesamolin exhibits antioxidant activity, contributing to the overall antioxidant capacity of sesame. Some in vitro and animal studies have explored potential effects on lipid metabolism, inflammation, and neuroprotection, but results are not conclusive for humans. The compound can be metabolized to related dibenzylbutyrolactone lignans such as sesamolinol in vivo, though the pharmacokinetics are not fully characterized.
