Serverirakke

Serverirakke, or server racks, are standardized enclosures designed to hold computer servers, networking gear and storage devices in data centers and server rooms. They are typically 19 inches wide and use vertical mounting rails with threaded holes at regular intervals. Equipment heights are measured in rack units, or U, with 1U equal to 1.75 inches. Racks come as open-frame structures or enclosed cabinets, and may include front and rear doors, side panels, and adjustable mounting rails.

Key features include mounting rails with standardized hole spacing, cable management features such as rear knockouts, blanking panels, and integrated power distribution units (PDUs). They are designed to support airflow management, often in front-to-back cooling configurations, and to bear substantial weight.

Types vary: open-frame racks are lighter and more economical and suited to test labs or space-constrained environments; enclosed cabinets offer security, physical protection and EMI shielding. Wall-mount racks are used for small networks, while floor-standing cabinets are common in data centers.

Standards: Equipment inside uses the 19-inch rack standard defined by the EIA-310 (and equivalent IEC norms). Heights are expressed in U, with typical deployments ranging from 1U to 42U or more, and depths from around 600 to 1200 mm.

Applications: server racks are central to data centers, enterprise IT rooms and telecom facilities. Proper design considers weight distribution, cooling, cable management, electrical supply, and security. Layout practices such as hot-aisle/cold-aisle containment improve efficiency.
