Sensors produce raw signals that require conversion, amplification, filtering, and digitization before they can be stored or analyzed. Standards and metadata describe sensor capabilities, accuracy, and provenance to support interoperability and reuse of data.

Challenges include sensor drift, environmental effects, cost constraints, calibration complexity, data quality, and privacy concerns.
