Semirígidos

Semirígidos refers to materials, joints or assemblies that exhibit stiffness between that of rigid and flexible elements. Elements classified as semirígidos resist deformation but permit a controlled, limited elastic displacement under load, returning toward their original shape when the load is removed. They often combine and balance stiffness, damping and some nonlinear or time-dependent behavior.

The semirígid condition can arise from material choice, geometry or a deliberate combination of components. Many semirígidos are viscoelastic, showing both instantaneous elastic response and gradual, time-dependent deformation, which provides vibration damping and energy dissipation. Their performance depends on factors such as temperature, loading rate, aging and environmental conditions.

Applications span several fields. In structural engineering, semi-rigid joints or connectors aim to reduce peak forces in frames and improve energy distribution during dynamic events. In mechanical engineering, semi-rigid mounts or couplings connect parts while isolating vibrations and accommodating misalignments. In materials engineering, semi-rigid foam cores and layered composites offer a balance between rigidity and lightness. In dentistry, semi-rigid connectors are used in certain prosthodontic designs to distribute occlusal loads and reduce stress concentrations on supporting structures.

Advantages of semirígidos include better load distribution, vibration damping, tolerance to assembly variations and potential weight reduction. Disadvantages can involve less precise control of motion, increased wear or aging effects, and greater complexity in design, testing and maintenance.
