Semianadromous
Semianadromous is a life history term used in ichthyology to describe fish populations in which migratory behavior between marine and freshwater environments is facultative or partial. In semianadromous populations, some individuals or subpopulations undertake anadromous migrations—moving from freshwater to the sea to grow and then returning to freshwater to spawn—while others remain freshwater residents for their entire lives. This results in a mixed set of life-history strategies within the same species or population and is sometimes referred to as facultative anadromy.
The expression of semianadromy is variable and influenced by factors such as age, size, environmental conditions,
Ecology and conservation considerations for semianadromous species center on maintaining both migratory corridors and freshwater habitats.
