Self-resolving describes a phenomenon, problem, or process that reaches a resolution or stabilizes without deliberate intervention from an external agent. It relies on intrinsic dynamics, self-correcting mechanisms, or natural evolution of the system.

In medicine and biology, self-resolving conditions are those that improve and disappear over time without specific treatment. Examples include many viral infections that run their course, mild rashes, and transient inflammatory responses. While self-resolution is common, medical care may still be appropriate if symptoms persist or worsen, or if there are risk factors for complications.

In social and conflict contexts, self-resolving disputes are disagreements that de-escalate and settle as parties reassess costs and benefits. This can occur through changes in incentives, shifts in leadership, or broadening social norms, reducing the need for external mediation. Critics note that not all conflicts self-resolve and some may require intervention to prevent harm.

In technology and engineering, self-resolving often refers to systems that recover from transient faults without human action. This includes auto-recovery behaviors, self-healing networks, and adaptive feedback that return a system to normal operation after fluctuations in demand or minor failures. The term can be loosely applied when a problem diminishes as the system stabilizes.

Limitations include the risk of masking underlying issues that may reappear later. Self-resolution does not guarantee permanence, and some problems require monitoring or intervention to ensure lasting stability.
