Selfpuffery

Selfpuffery is the act of praising or overstating one's own abilities, achievements, or status, often to influence others or attract attention. The term carries a generally negative connotation, implying exaggeration or insincerity rather than legitimate self-advocacy.

Etymology and scope: The word combines "self" with "puffery," i.e., inflated praise or hype, signaling that the puffery originates from the person involved. Selfpuffery can appear in résumés, online bios, interviews, press releases, or social-media posts.

Contexts and techniques: Common manifestations include selective disclosure, hyperbolic language, vague or unverifiable claims, and presenting ordinary results as exceptional. It may rely on buzzwords, lists of credentials, or testimonials that are not independently verifiable.

Effects and reception: When perceived as credible or context-appropriate, selfpuffery can draw attention or seed opportunities. More often, however, it damages credibility, invites skepticism, or triggers social backlash against perceived arrogance or narcissism.

Distinction: Selfpuffery differs from prudent self-promotion or confident communication when it uses verifiable information and transparent framing. It is usually contrasted with humility or fact-based messaging.
