Distinction

Distinction refers to the act or quality of being different or of setting something apart from others. It can denote a difference or contrast between things, or the process of recognizing and identifying that difference. The word comes from the Latin distinctio, meaning separation or differentiation.

In philosophy and logic, distinctions are precisely defined differences used to clarify concepts, properties, or categories. They help prevent ambiguity by separating ideas such as essence and accident, possibility and necessity, or terms within a syllogism. Distinctions can be conceptual, real, or logical, depending on how they relate to the objects under consideration.

Distinction also appears in education and professional recognition. In many systems, earning a distinction signals high achievement or mastery, such as a degree or qualification awarded “with distinction.” In some contexts, institutions use the term as a formal honor or grade indicating superior performance beyond a standard passing mark.

In everyday language, people speak of distinguishing features or criteria that differentiate items, people, or phenomena. Distinctions are often used in categorization, analysis, and decision-making, helping to organize information and guide judgments.

Distinction is not the same as discrimination, which can refer to unjust or prejudicial treatment based on group membership.
