Self-preservation, or the instinct to preserve one's life and well-being, is a fundamental drive observed across many species and cultures. In humans it encompasses physical safety, health, and emotional stability, and can motivate behavior from instinctive reflexes to deliberate decision-making. While it often operates automatically, it also interacts with social norms, ethics, and long-term goals.

Biologically, self-preservation is linked to the autonomic nervous system's fight-or-flight response, release of stress hormones, and neural circuits that evaluate danger and reward. Evolutionarily, organisms that effectively avoid harm have higher chances of survival and reproduction, reinforcing protective behaviors in populations.

Psychologically, self-preservation involves risk assessment, coping strategies, and boundary setting. It can coexist with altruism and care for others; in some cases, people may weigh personal safety against social or ethical commitments. Chronic threats can influence mental health and perceived safety.

Behaviors commonly associated with self-preservation include situational awareness, avoidance of known hazards, preparation and planning, compliance with safety protocols, and seeking help when appropriate. In extreme contexts, people may prioritize immediate safety, sometimes at the expense of longer-term objectives.

In applied contexts, self-preservation informs fields such as emergency response, safety training, and trauma theory. Ethical considerations include respecting autonomy, managing risk without needless harm, and understanding cultural differences in perceptions of danger and risk tolerance.
