Schleppkabels

Schleppkabels, in German often referred to as tow cables, are flexible lines used to pull or tow objects, equipment, or vehicles. They are designed for temporary or permanent towing operations in a range of settings, including automotive recovery, industrial work, aviation ground handling, and maritime tasks. They can be made from steel wire rope or synthetic fibers, with the choice depending on required strength, weight, and environmental conditions.

Construction and fittings: Steel tow cables offer high tensile strength and durability but are heavier and can corrode if not protected. Synthetic tow cables, typically made from high-strength fibers, are lighter and exhibit lower stretch, making handling easier, though they may be more vulnerable to abrasion and UV exposure. Tow cables are equipped with attachment hardware such as hooks, end fittings, or shackles, and often include protective sleeves and cable thimbles to minimize wear at connections. They come in a range of lengths, from several meters to several tens of meters, and in diameters sized to the load rating.

Applications: Schleppkabels are used in aviation and railway yard operations to reposition or tow equipment on the ground where a rigid tow bar is impractical; in maritime and industrial contexts they assist with towing, recovery, or testing procedures; they are also used in vehicle recovery and other temporary pulling tasks.

Safety and maintenance: Tow cables must be inspected before use for signs of wear, fraying, corrosion, or heat damage. Damaged lines should be retired or repaired only by qualified personnel. They should be used within their rated load limits, kept clear of sharp edges, and stored properly when not in service. Equipment should comply with applicable standards and manufacturer guidelines.
