The work typically takes place in a scenery shop or warehouse and involves carpentry, metalwork, machining, upholstery, scenic painting, and prop fabrication. It also includes integration with rigging systems, fly towers, lighting, and automation.

In theatres, stage builders work closely with the production designer and scenographer to realize designs through wooden flats, platforms, stairs, walls, and modular units. Modern practices emphasize modularity, reusability, and quick-change capabilities to support touring productions and complex scenes. Materials range from plywood, lumber, and steel to foam, fiberglass, and lightweight composites; finishes may include paint, textile finishes, vinyl, and specific fire-retardant treatments.

Key stages: design review; technical drawings and build plans; material procurement; construction and pre-assembly; on-site installation and rigging; painting and dressing; test and rehearsal integration; then strike and reuse or storage.

Safety and compliance are central, with adherence to local building codes, fire safety standards, and union agreements. Risk assessments, fall protection, proper lifting equipment, and personal protective equipment are standard.
