SWOTFOFA

SWOTFOFA is a strategic analysis framework that merges the traditional SWOT analysis with the FOFA approach to provide a forward-looking, integrated view of an organization’s strategic position. In this context, SWOT supplies the categories of internal strengths and weaknesses and external opportunities and threats, while FOFA contributes a forecasting and action-oriented sequence to explore and validate potential actions.

Origins of the term SWOTFOFA have appeared in limited practitioner literature and have not achieved widespread standardization. It is described as an attempt to combine qualitative SWOT findings with FOFA’s data-driven forecast and feasibility components, enabling a more forward-focused planning process.

Process-wise, SWOTFOFA proceeds in two phases. First, a standard SWOT analysis identifies factors across internal and external dimensions. Second, the FOFA cycle is applied to each factor: forecast relevant trends, assess opportunities or risks, evaluate feasibility and resource requirements, and define concrete actions and metrics. The results are reconciled by linking SWOT items to prioritized FOFA actions and success indicators.

Applications and benefits of SWOTFOFA include use in corporate planning, product development, and risk management where organizations seek both a structured internal/external scan and a forward-looking action plan. Benefits cited include clearer prioritization, alignment with future scenarios, and explicit measurement criteria for progress.

Limitations and criticisms note the lack of standard definitions for FOFA and the potential complexity of integrating qualitative and quantitative analyses, which can affect consistency and comparability. Critics also caution against making the framework overly procedural if not grounded in realistic data.
