SANSwitches

SANSwitches are network devices that interconnect servers and storage devices within a storage area network. They provide dedicated, high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity, enabling fabric-level communication between host ports and storage ports. The switches operate as central components of Fibre Channel–based or Ethernet-based storage fabrics and support features such as zoning, fabric authentication, multipath I/O, and quality of service to control access and performance.

Most SANSwitches are Fibre Channel switches that forward FC frames across a switched fabric. Some switches also support storage protocols over Ethernet, such as iSCSI or Fibre Channel over Ethernet, and there is growing support for NVMe over Fabrics. Zoning partitions the fabric so that only authorized hosts can access certain storage ports or LUNs; NPIV allows multiple virtual ports per host HBA, improving utilization and flexibility.

Design approaches for SANSwitches range from fixed-configuration to modular systems, with scalable fabrics, redundant supervisors, and hot-swappable power supplies to improve availability and growth capacity. They are typically deployed in multi-switch fabrics to provide non-blocking or low-latency paths between servers and storage arrays, with mechanisms for path failover and load balancing.

Management and operations are performed through command-line interfaces or web-based consoles, and switches offer monitoring, logging, and integration with management frameworks. Features often include role-based access control, SNMP support, and compatibility with virtualization platforms to enable multipathing and coordinated failover.

Common use cases include large enterprises with shared storage, virtualization environments, database workloads, and backup or archival systems requiring predictable performance and high availability. The SAN switch market emphasizes reliability and scalable management, with ongoing evolution toward NVMe-oF and software-defined approaches integrated into broader storage architectures.
