Sähkövetureihin, or electric locomotives, are railway engines powered by electricity. This electricity is typically supplied from an external source, such as overhead lines or a third rail, through a pantograph or collector shoe respectively. Electric locomotives are known for their high efficiency, strong acceleration, and quiet operation compared to diesel-powered locomotives. They produce no direct emissions, making them an environmentally friendly choice for rail transport.

The development of electric traction began in the late 19th century, with early systems often using direct current (DC). Modern electric locomotives commonly utilize alternating current (AC) technology, which allows for more powerful and efficient performance. They are equipped with electric motors that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy to drive the wheels. Sophisticated control systems manage the power delivery and braking.

Electric locomotives are widely used for both passenger and freight services across the globe. Their consistent power output is advantageous for heavy hauling and rapid transit systems like commuter and metro lines. The infrastructure required, including power substations and catenary systems, represents a significant initial investment, but operating costs are generally lower due to electricity's efficiency and lower maintenance needs for electric motors. The reliance on an external power source means their operational range is limited to electrified lines.
