Rollimäng

Rollimäng, also known as role-playing game (RPG), is a game where players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players collectively tell a story by making decisions for their characters. This can be done through spoken dialogue, written narratives, or even live-action role-playing.

There are two main categories of rollimäng: tabletop role-playing games (TRPGs) and live-action role-playing games (LARPs). In TRPGs, a group of players gathers around a table, often with a game master (GM) or dungeon master (DM) who acts as narrator and referee. The GM describes the world and the situations the characters encounter, and players describe their characters' actions. Dice rolls or other randomizers are often used to determine the success or failure of actions. Popular examples include Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder.

LARPs involve players physically acting out their characters' actions. This often takes place in a dedicated venue, with costumes and props contributing to the immersive experience. The rules and narrative are usually managed by organizers or a GM.

Video role-playing games (VRPGs) are a digital adaptation of the rollimäng concept. Players control characters within a computer-generated world, undertaking quests, interacting with non-player characters (NPCs), and developing their characters' abilities. These can be single-player experiences or massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) where thousands of players interact in a shared virtual space. Examples include The Witcher series and World of Warcraft.

The core appeal of rollimäng lies in its ability to foster creativity, storytelling, and social interaction. Players can explore different personalities, make meaningful choices with consequences, and work together to overcome challenges.
