Singleplayer refers to a mode or experience in video games designed for a single player. In these games progression and challenges are intended to be completed without other human players, relying on computer-controlled opponents, allies, or the game world itself. This contrasts with multiplayer modes, including competitive and cooperative play, that involve two or more players either locally or online.

Singleplayer experiences can be standalone titles or campaigns within larger games. They often emphasize narrative, world-building, exploration, puzzle solving, and player choice. Gameplay may be linear or open-ended, with missions, quests, or sandbox activities guiding progress. Artificial intelligence controls non-player characters, enemies, and companions, while progress is typically saved locally or via cloud saves. Difficulty is tuned through AI behavior, level design, and pacing rather than matchmaking routines.

Design considerations include pacing, atmosphere, and storytelling, as well as accessibility options and replayability through collectibles, multiple endings, or branching paths. Singleplayer has historically been a primary format for many genres, including action-adventure, RPG, and immersive sims. In early video games, singleplayer was the default mode; in modern titles, many games offer both singleplayer campaigns and optional multiplayer components, while some focus exclusively on singleplayer experiences.
