Replayability is the extent to which a work can be re-experienced with meaningful variation after its initial completion. In games, it often aims to provide value beyond a single playthrough by encouraging players to revisit the title to discover new outcomes, hidden content, or different playstyles. While the term is most commonly applied to video games, it can apply to any interactive medium where user actions alter subsequent experiences.

Key factors influencing replayability include narrative branching and multiple endings; procedural generation and randomized elements; unlockables, progression systems, and New Game Plus modes; adjustable difficulty and scoring that reward mastery or experimentation; dynamic AI and flexible level design; and multiplayer or cooperative modes that create emergent experiences.

Designers often balance replayability with production costs and time. Techniques such as randomized level layouts, choice-driven dialogue, alternate character builds, time-limited events, and rewards that persist across playthroughs are used to extend engagement.

Measuring replayability relies on both qualitative and quantitative indicators. Analysts look at return rates, total playtime per user, frequency of multiple completed playthroughs, the prevalence of new endings or routes, and engagement with unlockables, achievements, or leaderboards.

Critics note that high replayability can increase development costs and risk of player fatigue if variability is superficial or unbalanced, and some players prefer a concise, single-driven experience.
