Roestwerend is a Dutch term that translates to “rust‑resistant” in English. It describes materials, coatings or treatments that inhibit the formation of iron oxide, commonly known as rust, on ferrous surfaces when exposed to moisture, oxygen or corrosive agents. The property is especially important for steel and iron components used in construction, automotive, maritime and industrial applications where durability and safety are critical.

The underlying mechanisms of rust resistance involve either the creation of a physical barrier that limits contact with water and oxygen, or the alteration of the metal’s surface chemistry to reduce its reactivity. Common approaches include the application of protective paints, galvanisation (coating with zinc), stainless steel alloys that contain chromium, and modern nano‑coatings such as ceramic or polymer films.
