Roddannelse

Roddannelse is a Danish term that translates to root formation in English and refers to the process by which plant roots are produced and develop. In botany, roddannelse encompasses both embryonic root formation during seed germination and post-embryonic root development from existing tissues.

During seed germination, the radicle emerges as the first root and initiates the primary root system. In later stages, roots branch through the formation of lateral roots from the pericycle and, in some species or conditions, adventitious roots from non-root tissues such as stems or leaves. Adventitious rooting is especially important in vegetative propagation, where cuttings or grafted plants rely on new roots that form after disturbance of the main plant.

Hormonal control is central to roddannelse. Auxins are the primary regulators of root initiation and growth, often in concert with cytokinins, ethylene, and other signals. The precise timing and location of root formation depend on genetic factors and environmental conditions, including light, temperature, water availability, and nutrient status.
