Robotsspiders refers to a family of robotic systems designed to mimic the morphology and locomotion of spiders. These platforms use multiple articulated legs and light, compliant structures to negotiate irregular terrain, climb obstacles, and access confined spaces where wheels or tracks are limited. The term encompasses both fully autonomous eight‑legged robots and modular leg units that can be mounted on various chassis.

Design features commonly include eight articulating legs with multiple joints, often driven by electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic actuators. Joints may employ torque sensing and compliance to absorb shocks. A lightweight chassis forms a rigid frame, while soft or compliant materials improve safety when handling delicate objects or operating near humans.

Locomotion relies on coordinated leg gaits, which can be centralized or decentralized. Algorithms may use central pattern generators, motion planning, and sensor feedback to maintain stability on uneven or slippery surfaces. Navigation integrates sensors such as cameras, lidars, tactile arrays, and inertial measurement units, often with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM).

Autonomy ranges from teleoperation to fully autonomous operation with onboard perception, planning, and control. Some designs emphasize modularity, allowing leg replacement or reconfiguration for different tasks. Power is typically supplied by batteries, with tradeoffs between weight, endurance, and payload.

Applications include search and rescue, disaster response, industrial inspection, and exploration in cluttered environments. In research, robotsspiders serve as testbeds for legged locomotion, manipulation, and soft robotics. They also offer potential advantages in inspection of pipelines, wreckage, or disaster zones where wheeled robots struggle.
