Ristiparikaapelit, also known as twisted pair cables, are a common type of electrical cabling used for transmitting data. They consist of two insulated copper wires twisted together. This twisting arrangement is crucial as it helps to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) from external sources and also minimizes crosstalk between adjacent pairs of wires.

There are two main categories of twisted pair cables: unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded twisted pair (STP). UTP cables are the most prevalent and cost-effective, commonly used in Ethernet networks for computer connections. STP cables include an additional layer of shielding, such as foil or a braided metal mesh, which provides better protection against EMI and crosstalk, making them suitable for environments with high levels of interference.

Twisted pair cables are categorized by categories (Cat) which indicate their performance capabilities, such as bandwidth and transmission speed. For instance, Cat5e and Cat6 are widely used for gigabit Ethernet, offering higher data rates and improved performance compared to older categories. The connectors typically used with twisted pair cables are RJ45 connectors, which are standardized for easy plug-and-play connectivity in networking applications. Their widespread use, affordability, and ease of installation have made them a staple in telecommunications and data networking for decades.
