Riciklimi

Riciklimi is the Albanian term for recycling, the process of converting waste materials into new products to extend resource use and reduce environmental impact. As a component of modern waste management, riciklimi aims to divert materials from landfills and incineration, conserve natural resources, save energy, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The recycling process typically involves collection and sorting of materials, cleaning and processing into a usable feedstock, and manufacturing new items from that feedstock. Common recycling streams include paper and cardboard, glass, metals, and certain plastics, with specialized programs for electronics and organic waste. Plastic recycling often differentiates between mechanical recycling, which reprocesses plastics into pellets or filaments, and chemical recycling, which breaks polymers down to feedstocks for new plastics. Provisions such as downcycling and upcycling describe outcomes where recycled materials are used in lower- or higher-value products, respectively.

Benefits of riciklimi include reduced extraction of virgin resources, energy savings, and lower emissions, as well as economic opportunities in collection, sorting, and manufacturing sectors. Social gains arise from community recycling programs and heightened environmental awareness.

Challenges persist, including contamination of recyclables, inconsistent collection systems, fluctuating markets for recycled materials, and the energy demands of processing. Policy measures—such as extended producer responsibility, deposit return schemes, and landfill restrictions—are commonly used to improve recycling rates.

Historically, recycling concepts have evolved over many decades and are now integrated into national and international waste management frameworks to varying degrees, depending on infrastructure, economy, and regulation.
