Rhodo

Rhodo is a common shorthand for the plant genus Rhododendron, a large group of woody shrubs and small trees in the heath family, Ericaceae. The genus includes both evergreen and deciduous species, many valued for their showy flowers in spring.

Rhododendron comprises hundreds of species and numerous cultivars. Leaves are typically leathery, with evergreen species retaining foliage year-round and many azaleas (a subset within Rhododendron) being deciduous. Flowers are produced in dense clusters, often funnel- or bell-shaped, and come in a wide range of colors including white, pink, red, purple, and yellow.

Native ranges are broad, including Asia, Europe, and North America. Natural habitats vary from temperate forests to alpine regions. Most rhododendrons prefer acidic, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and partial shade, though some tolerate more sun with adequate moisture. They are commonly grown as ornamental shrubs in gardens and parks.

Cultivation tips emphasize soil and moisture management: a soil pH around 4.5 to 6.0, good drainage, and mulching to conserve moisture and regulate temperature. Watering should be steady but not waterlogged; avoid overhead irrigation that can promote disease. Pruning needs depend on the group and cultivar; many evergreen rhododendrons are pruned after flowering to maintain shape, while some species require little pruning.

Toxicity and ecology note that some rhododendrons contain grayanotoxins; nectar from certain species can be hazardous to livestock and humans in rare cases, and honey produced from rhododendron nectar has been linked to poisoning. Pests and diseases include root rot and various leaf disorders, requiring appropriate horticultural care.
