Rhodiumbehandlung refers to a surface treatment process that involves the application of a thin layer of rhodium onto another metal, most commonly silver or gold. This electroplating technique is widely used in the jewelry industry to enhance the appearance and durability of precious metals. Rhodium is a platinum-group metal known for its exceptional hardness, reflectivity, and resistance to tarnishing.

The primary benefit of a Rhodiumbehandlung is its ability to create a bright, white, and lustrous finish. For silver, rhodium plating effectively prevents the metal from oxidizing and developing a dull, dark patina, a common issue with silver jewelry. This allows silver pieces to retain their shine for much longer periods. In the case of gold, particularly yellow gold, rhodium plating can be used to achieve a white gold appearance without altering the underlying gold alloy.

The process itself involves immersing the item to be treated into an electrolytic bath containing rhodium salts. An electric current is passed through the solution, causing a thin layer of rhodium to deposit onto the surface of the metal. The thickness of this layer can vary depending on the desired outcome and application, but it is typically very thin, measured in microns.
