Revolutions

A revolution denotes a fundamental and relatively rapid change in a society's political, social, or economic structures. It typically involves broad mobilization, disruption of order, and a reordering of power relations, and it is distinguished from gradual reform or evolutionary change by its sweeping character and pace.

Revolutions are commonly categorized as political, social, or economic (or technological) revolutions. Political revolutions seek to replace rulers or regimes; social revolutions aim to alter class relations, property norms, and institutions; economic or industrial revolutions transform production, technology, and economic organization. Some events are multi-dimensional examples, and the term is also used for scientific or cultural shifts, such as the Scientific Revolution or digital revolution.

Causes include sustained grievances, economic crisis, leadership and organization, external pressure, and opportunities created by war or unrest. Revolutions usually unfold through stages: emergence, crisis and mobilization, a decisive confrontation or collapse, and a post-revolution settlement that shapes the rules and institutions that follow.

Notable instances include the French Revolution (1789), the Russian Revolution (1917), the Chinese Communist Revolution (1949), and the American Revolution (1776). The Industrial Revolution (late 18th to 19th centuries) transformed economies and societies more gradually but profoundly. Nonviolent and mass-movement revolutions have also shaped history, as in some cases of Velvet or color revolutions.

Outcomes of revolutions vary greatly and are contested among scholars. They can democratize and liberalize, but can also lead to new forms of tyranny, civil conflict, or prolonged upheaval. Historiography emphasizes structural factors, leadership, and contingency; debates center on whether revolutions reflect inevitable historical dynamics or contingent events shaped by actors and institutions.
