1949 was a pivotal year in the early Cold War, marking the consolidation of political power in the People's Republic of China, the formal division of Germany, and the formation of major Western and Eastern blocs.

In October, Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China, following the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War; the Nationalist government retreated to Taiwan.

In Europe, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established on April 4, 1949, creating a formal security alliance among Western powers. The same year also saw the first steps toward a divided Germany: the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) came into being with the Basic Law on May 23, 1949, and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) was established on October 7, 1949. The Soviet Union and its allies created the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (Comecon) in 1949 to coordinate economic planning.

In the Soviet Union, the first atomic bomb test on August 29, 1949, introduced the nuclear age beyond the United States.

Indonesia’s sovereignty was finally recognized by the Netherlands, with the transfer of sovereignty taking place on December 27, 1949.
