Resharpenings

Resharpenings refer to the process of restoring the cutting edge of a blade or tool that has already been sharpened previously. The aim is to remove a minimal amount of worn material to recreate a sharp edge, rather than to grind away the entire blade. The term is used across domains such as kitchen cutlery, woodworking tools, drilling and milling bits, and lawn and garden implements. Resharpening extends tool life, improves performance, and reduces waste, but feasibility depends on the tool’s material, temper, and edge geometry.

The resharpening operation typically involves reintroducing the correct bevel angle, sometimes adding a micro-bevel for durability, and ensuring the edge is free of nicks and deformations. For knives and chisels, common bevel angles range from about 15-25 degrees per side; drill bits and other tools may use different specifications. It is important to avoid overheating during grinding, which can temper the edge and reduce hardness. Proper technique preserves edge geometry and prevents weakening the blade.

Materials matter: carbon steel and stainless steel blades can usually be resharpened several times, while carbide-tipped tools tolerate fewer reedges and may require specialized equipment. Repeated resharpenings thin the edge and can reduce blade height, potentially affecting stability if the blade body becomes too thin. In some tools, especially worn lawn mower or planer blades, excessive material removal is undesirable and replacement may be more economical.

Common methods include manual sharpening with whetstones or diamond stones, honing with strops, and powered sharpening using grinders or belt machines. For precision edges, jigs and guides help maintain the intended geometry. Professional resharpeners may use inspection and specialized equipment to restore edge geometry and balance.
