A mower, or lawn mower, is a machine designed to cut grass to an even height across a lawn or other vegetation. Most models use a rotating blade or set of blades to slice the grass as the machine passes over the surface. Regular mowing promotes a denser, healthier turf by encouraging uniform growth and helping to control weeds. Grass clippings may be discharged behind the mower, collected in a bag, or mulched to feed the lawn.

Mowers vary by power source and design. Manual reel mowers are push-operated and rely on scissor-like blades. Rotary mowers use a single spinning blade and are typically powered by gasoline or electricity; electric mowers can be corded or cordless. Riding mowers and lawn tractors are larger units driven by the operator and used for extensive areas. Robotic mowers operate autonomously within a defined boundary.

Historically, mowing machines were developed in the 19th century; the first practical lawn mower was invented in 1830 by Edwin Budding in England, with refinements by John Ferrabee and later manufacturers expanding production. Since then, gasoline-powered and electric models have become common, and autonomous robotic mowers are increasingly used for private lawns and some commercial settings.

Safety and maintenance: follow manufacturer instructions and local regulations. Keep blades sharp and balanced; clean and dry the mower after use; change oil and air filters as recommended for gasoline engines; inspect cords for wear on electric models; ensure proper blade guards and safety features; never mow on wet turf; store fuels safely. Environmentally, electric mowers emit fewer pollutants, and mulching reduces waste while helping to nourish the soil.
