Rekristallisationen, also known as recrystallization, is a process used in chemistry and materials science to purify solid crystalline substances. It involves dissolving a solid compound in a suitable solvent at high temperature and then gradually cooling the solution to allow the pure crystals to form, leaving impurities in the solvent. This technique is commonly employed to improve purity and obtain crystalline samples with well-defined structures.

The process begins with selecting an appropriate solvent, one in which the target compound is soluble at elevated temperatures but relatively insoluble at lower temperatures. The impure solid is then dissolved in hot solvent to create a saturated solution. Upon slow cooling, the target compound crystallizes out preferentially, often in the form of larger, more orderly crystals. Impurities either remain dissolved or are excluded from the crystalline lattice during this process.

Rekristallisation is widely used in organic and inorganic chemistry labs for purifying synthesized compounds, as well as in industrial settings to refine raw materials. The effectiveness of recrystallization depends on factors such as solvent choice, cooling rate, and the presence of impurities.
