Regionalset

Regionalset is a concept in software internationalization that refers to a set of regional preferences used to tailor content presentation and data processing to a user’s cultural context. It encapsulates how information is interpreted and displayed, guiding formatting, layout, and behavior across an application.

A regionalset typically includes language and region identifiers, time zone, date and time formats, number formatting (decimal and thousand separators), currency, calendar system, and sometimes the measurement system and text direction. It can also influence resource selection, pluralization rules, sorting behavior, and UI conventions. In practice, regionalsets are assembled from user preferences, device or system settings, or detected via geolocation, and are applied to formatting rules and UI decisions.

In many systems the term regionalset is closely related to or used interchangeably with locale or culture. The exact terminology and structure are implementation-specific, so regionalsets may be exposed as a simple locale code (such as en-US) or as a richer object containing multiple fields. They are commonly stored as a structured data object or dictionary and retrieved at runtime to format numbers, dates, and currencies, to choose appropriate resources, and to adjust UI layout.
