Redtile

Redtile is a term used to describe ceramic tiles that exhibit a red coloration, typically produced from red clay or through the application of iron oxide-based glazes. The color can vary from orange-red to deep brick red depending on the clay body, glaze chemistry, and firing temperature. Redtiles have a long history in terracotta and masonry architecture, particularly in Mediterranean, Spanish, and Southwestern styles. They are commonly used for roofing as well as for floor and wall tiles, valued for their warm appearance and outdoor durability.

Manufacture involves shaping a clay body, drying to remove moisture, and firing in a kiln. The red color may come from the inherent hue of iron-rich clay or from glaze pigments applied before firing. Glazed redtiles can provide surface protection and color permanence, while unglazed terracotta redtiles develop a patina over time. In roofing, redtiles form interlocking or nailed/batten-fixed systems designed to shed water and resist weathering. In flooring and walls, they provide slip resistance when textured and can be glazed for easier cleaning.

Variants include traditional unglazed terracotta redtiles, glazed redtiles offering color longevity and decorative potential, and modern manufactured composites that mimic natural reds while improving durability and weight. Environmental considerations include energy use in firing and the potential for efflorescence on masonry surfaces. Redtile remains a popular aesthetic choice for earthy, rustic, or historic-inspired architecture, balancing visual warmth with practical performance.
