Rebonding

Rebonding refers to the process of re-establishing a bond between two surfaces or components after the original bond has failed or separated. The term is used in several fields, most notably dentistry and hair care, and in each context it denotes renewing a connection to restore function or appearance while minimizing damage to the substrate.

In dentistry, rebonding commonly describes reattaching a detached orthodontic bracket to a tooth. The procedure typically begins with cleaning the tooth surface and removing any residual cement. The enamel may be conditioned with an etching agent to increase bonding strength, a new adhesive resin is applied, and the bracket is repositioned and cured with a dental light. Rebonding may be required if brackets debond during treatment or if a wire becomes loose. The success of the procedure depends on factors such as enamel condition, moisture control, and patient hygiene.

In hair care, rebonding, often simply called hair rebonding, is a permanent chemical straightening method. It involves reducing the disulfide bonds within the hair using a reducing agent, then reshaping and sealing them with a neutralizer to form new bonds in a straighter configuration. The process can take several hours and results typically last several months, depending on hair type and aftercare. Risks include scalp irritation, hair damage from overprocessing, and uneven results if the procedure is not performed correctly.

Professional application is advised in both domains to minimize risks. Aftercare, such as proper cleaning and conditioning in dentistry and avoiding harsh chemicals in hair care, helps maintain bond integrity and hair health.
