Rauhasen

Rauhasen is a fictional species of large lagomorphs described in fantasy literature and world-building compendia. The name derives from German rauh (“rough”) and hase (“hare”), alluding to the animals’ coarse fur and hardy demeanor. In most depictions rauhasen are solitary or form small family groups, adapting to rugged habitats.

Physically, rauhasen are robust, with a shaggy, weather-resistant coat, a short tail, strong hind legs, and a broad snout. They stand about 40–60 cm at the shoulder and may weigh 6–15 kg, making them larger than many wild hares. Coloration ranges from dark brown to pale gray, providing camouflage in rocky environments.

Rauhasen inhabit high-altitude tundra, alpine scree, and rocky shrublands. They prefer sparse vegetation and use crevices and burrows to escape predators. They are herbivorous, feeding on grasses, mosses, lichens, and low shrubs. Their reproductive cycle is seasonal, with litters born after spring rains; survival depends on cold-season caching and den maintenance.

Behaviorally, rauhasen are described as wary and energetic; they can sprint short distances and may engage in brief territorial displays. In fictional worlds they often symbolize endurance and winter resilience, appearing in folklore as omens or guardians of alpine passes. Some authors attribute mythical healing properties to their fur when spun into talismans.
