Rasvakertymiä, also known as lipoma, is a common benign tumor that develops from the fat cells in the body. It is typically slow-growing and painless, making it often discovered incidentally during a physical examination or imaging studies. Lipomas can occur anywhere in the body but are most frequently found on the skin, particularly in areas with a high concentration of fat cells, such as the neck, back, and shoulders.

The exact cause of lipomas is not fully understood, but they are believed to result from an overgrowth of fat cells. They can vary in size, ranging from a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter. Small lipomas may not require treatment and can be left alone, while larger ones may be removed surgically if they cause discomfort, interfere with daily activities, or are cosmetically bothersome.

Diagnosis of a lipoma usually involves a physical examination and, in some cases, imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI. Treatment options depend on the size, location, and symptoms associated with the lipoma. Small lipomas may be monitored without intervention, while larger ones may be surgically removed. In rare cases, lipomas can become malignant, transforming into liposarcoma, a rare and aggressive type of soft tissue sarcoma. However, this transformation is extremely uncommon and typically occurs in older adults.

Lipomas are generally considered harmless and do not pose a significant health risk. However, they can be a cosmetic concern for some individuals, and surgical removal may be pursued for aesthetic reasons. Regular follow-up with a healthcare provider is recommended to monitor any changes in size or symptoms associated with the lipoma.
